Cephalexin 250mg Capsules

Cephalexin 250mg is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used for susceptible bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, skin, ear and urinary tract, and selected bone infections. It is an oral treatment for bacteria sensitive to cephalexin, also spelled cefalexin. It does not treat viral colds or influenza.
Swallow the capsule with water. It can be taken with or without food; a meal may reduce stomach upset. Space doses evenly through the day and complete the infection-specific course. Kidney impairment can change the amount or interval needed.
Cephalexin binds to penicillin-binding proteins and interrupts bacterial cell-wall synthesis. The weakened cell wall leads to death of susceptible bacteria.
Diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain and vomiting can occur. Severe or persistent watery diarrhoea, blood in stools, a widespread blistering rash or swelling with breathing difficulty needs urgent attention.
Tell your doctor about previous serious reactions to cephalosporins or penicillins, kidney disease, antibiotic-associated colitis, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Probenecid can increase cephalexin exposure, and metformin or anticoagulant treatment may need monitoring. Confusion or seizures during treatment can be a sign of excessive exposure, particularly with kidney impairment.
Successful bacterial clearance allows fever, tenderness, urinary discomfort or local inflammation to improve according to the infection site. The clinical response depends on organism sensitivity and an adequate treatment course.
No. They are spelling variants of the same active ingredient. They should not be counted as two different antibiotics in a treatment plan.
No. Some organisms are resistant, and complicated infection may require another approach. A urine culture can guide the choice when symptoms recur, worsen or fail to respond.
The reaction history matters. A previous severe immediate reaction or serious skin reaction must be assessed before using another beta-lactam antibiotic; an unspecified allergy label is not enough to decide either way.
No. Mild loose stools can occur, but persistent watery diarrhoea, blood, fever or significant cramps may indicate antibiotic-associated colitis, including after the course ends.
