Cefpodoxime proxetil with ofloxacin is a dual-antibiotic combination for selected susceptible bacterial infections. It combines an oral cephalosporin prodrug with a fluoroquinolone.
How to use
Swallow the tablets with food and water to support cefpodoxime absorption. Leave at least two hours before or after iron, zinc and magnesium- or aluminium-containing antacids because ofloxacin can bind to these minerals.
How it works
Cefpodoxime proxetil is converted to cefpodoxime, which inhibits cell-wall synthesis; ofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA-processing enzymes.
Side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, headache and dizziness may occur.
Important information
Tell your doctor about cephalosporin allergy, kidney disease, tendon problems, seizures and QT prolongation. Fluoroquinolones can cause serious tendon, nerve and neurological adverse effects.

Yes. New nerve symptoms require prompt review because fluoroquinolone neuropathy can persist.
Can I use iron or zinc at the same time?
Leave at least two hours before or after iron, zinc, magnesium- or aluminium-containing antacids. These products can bind ofloxacin in the gut and reduce absorption.
Can adults and children use the same treatment plan?
No. A fluoroquinolone combination is not a routine choice for every child. Age, weight, infection and the reason for using ofloxacin need individual assessment.
Why does kidney function affect the schedule?
Reduced renal clearance can increase exposure to either component.
Does early improvement mean the course can stop?
Follow the prescribed duration unless adverse effects prompt a clinician-directed change.
What if diarrhoea becomes severe or bloody?
Seek assessment for antibiotic-associated colitis instead of self-treating with antidiarrhoeals.
