Azelastine with fluticasone furoate is a combination nasal treatment for allergic rhinitis, providing both antihistamine and corticosteroid activity. It helps control nasal congestion, sneezing, itching and a runny nose.
How to use
Prime and shake as directed, blow the nose gently and aim the nozzle away from the nasal septum. Inhale gently while spraying, then clean the nozzle. Use the formulation's prescribed actuation schedule consistently.
How it works
Azelastine blocks histamine H1 receptors, while fluticasone furoate suppresses local inflammatory gene signalling through glucocorticoid receptors.
Side effects
Nasal irritation, headache, mild nosebleed or unpleasant taste can occur; azelastine can also cause drowsiness.
Important information
Nasal injury or surgery, persistent bleeding, glaucoma and strong CYP3A4 inhibitors need review. Nasal sprays are not emergency treatments for an asthma attack.
